Stamping Die Overview

What is Stamping Die?
A stamping die is a unit consisting of a male (horn) and female (shoe) half that is mounted in a press and as the press opens and closes (cycles) material placed in the die is either blanked, formed, flanged, pierced, punched or marked.

It typically requires a set of stamping dies to form a completed part. The exception is progressive dies, whereas parts are progressively formed as it passes through stations in a single die.

Metal stamping is used to mass produce formed metal components for industries such as automotive, medical, consumer products, aerospace, computer and electronics.

Stamping dies are designed and manufactured by tool and die shops. Often, the tool and die shops that produce the dies do not run them in large scale production. Once the die has been “proven” by prototype runs at the die maker’s shop it is normally shipped to a manufacturing facility that specializes in production stamping.
